Donor, Door Method of Ross Procedure in Indonesia

Application of Ross method
Procedure in Indonesia for patients with severe heart disease still hampered the availability of donors. Though this method is much safer than with heart transplantation who had already been known.

This was disclosed Dr.
Tarmizi Hakim, MD, FICS, FCCP, Senior
Cardio Thoracic Surgeon Hospital Cardiovascular Harapan Kita sidelines of a press conference the first application of the Ross Procedure in Indonesia some time ago.

"This method is actually
very safe and reasonably reduce the risk of just that its application is still difficult conducted in Indonesia. The main difficulties we encountered one of them about donors who want to donate some blood vessels heart because without the donor is, of course this method can not we do "says Dr.
Tarmizi.

In developed countries like America, Europe, and China, this method has long been applied because of the donor bank is always ready to provide donors for patients in need. These donors comes from people who voluntarily donate live organs and also people who is dead but his organs are still good condition.

The main cause of lack of donors in Indonesia include because of lack of socialization and understanding of the consequences of this method people are afraid to be a donor, to donate a lack of awareness and care against the lives of others, as well as unclear regulations that specifically regulate about organ donation, and so forth.

"We do not have a bank such as donor
other developed countries due to many factors hampered. Problem buying and selling organs in Indonesia also banned "added Dr. Tarmizi.

Ross Procedure is a method of cardiac surgery on patients with valve aortanya clogged. The valve was replaced by the patient's pulmonary valve itself, while his pulmonary valve was replaced by "homograft" tissue collection of vessels that can be taken either from people who still living and dead.

The difference lies in the heart transplant used as replacement parts from the heart of the sick organ. If the heart transplant, the heart of another person who entered in the patient's body, then in the Ross Procedure, section was topped by his own pulmonary valve.

"Both types of treatment were clearly different but they both need a donor. Ross procedure only took some blood vessels of other persons not heart organ "said Dr. Tarmizi.

Regarding the possibility of rejection in the patient's body, explained Dr. Tarmizi, very little happens if all the pre surgery and donor observation well done. "Was his first donor observed and pass a screening process, most importantly, no there is any metal material which is inserted into the patient's body, this is
cause this method is safe and rare rejection "he said.

In addition to the availability of donors, other constraints facing the world of medicine in Indonesia is still the lack of resources humans are able to do this method caused by the degree of difficulty high.

Therefore, RSJPD Harapan Kita initiative formed a partnership with King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in developing this method in Indonesia. One of them brought Dr. Zohair Yousef Al Halees, MD, Distinguished Senior Consultant - Cardiac Surgery to train young doctors from Indonesia about the method. The training of young doctors will become an ongoing program in which the period of 6 months, they will sent to Saudi Arabia to learn about the ross procedure specific to the homograft.

"This training program is of course very good for medical developments in Indonesia, we really appreciate it but at present we have not determined the time to start the program and period cooperation, but is expected to run as soon as possible "said Dr. Zohair which came to Indonesia from March 7, 2011.

As a first step, in addition to cooperating between both hospitals, Dr. Zohair RSJPD team Harapan Kita Ross Procedure surgery with Homograft first time in Indonesia against the five patients consists mainly of children. Operations on the fifth led Dr immediately. Zohair within 3 days during his stay in Indonesia.

"Ross Operation This procedure is otherwise successful and this would be the pride a great pleasure for us all that Indonesia had been able to do so "said Iwan Dakota, Human Capital & General Affairs Director RSJPD Harapan Kita.

What needs to be done in the future, added Dr. Iwan, is continuing to develop the potential that exists primarily human resources with embrace many developed countries in collaboration to train young doctors exist in Indonesia, the role of the government, and of course, public awareness about the donor. "Patients with severe heart disease in Indonesia amount very much, for that we need to work together, of course, also with support government to continue to develop various methods in the medical world for quality of life for the better "he said.
