Crisis In Japan 2011: Hydrogen Explosion Can Happen Again

Nuclear crisis in Japan reportedly is getting worse. Experts from the United States say, radiation exposure is far above the normal range with a radius of the location of the safest of radiation exposure is a zone outside a radius of 80 km.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government determined that the safest is the outside radius of 30 km.

Perhaps one question that arises is, what's the worst of the nuclear crisis on the country's Sakura? Will life-threatening nuclear explosion that happened? Then, if it happens, will the strength to match the explosion in Chernobyl, Ukraine in 1986 then?

Nuclear technology experts from the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Zaki Suud argues, "The possibility of a small nuclear explosion. The explosion of hydrogen in the reactor building as happened a few days ago could have happened. However, if a question is like a nuclear explosion in Chernobyl first, small likely will happen. "

According to Zaki, the explosion could occur if the reactor under normal operating conditions. "If the reactor in Japan is, right, has been shut down," he said. For information, the explosion occurred when the Chernobyl nuclear reactor is still in an active state resulting in a large and high ekskalasi radioactive substances dispersed into the environment.

"Probably the worst possible is melted. But it also can occur in normal operation. If this melt could lead to critical condition. But in my opinion, the Japanese government had anticipated the occurrence of the condition by adding boron," said Zaki who is a lecturer in Natural Sciences ITB.

Zaki said, the vulnerability actually comes from residual fuel. If the residual fuel is not successfully cooled and melted, radioactive substances may be spread. But, he once again asserted, radioactive substances that may not be distributed at the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Japan is currently trying to reconnect the power cord to the Fukushima nuclear power plant so that the coolant pump can return to function. Zaki rate, this effort is promising.

"There are some coolant pump on the inside. Well, it just might work if one is connected and working again, it was very helpful," he said.

In great shape terpepet, Japan actually still have the ultimate weapon. "That the reactor could have given a lot of boron, and can be closed with cement. That way it will be trapped in the cosmic radiation. This is when you're very concerned of course. Actually, right, this step is also conducted at Chernobyl."

But he considered, the move was not going to be Japanese. Handling nuclear crisis this time he also once stakes credibility in managing nuclear power plants. "If you close the cement step is done, maybe people will think Japan is not far different from the one in Chernobyl," he said.

What will happen next? Zaki is still awaiting the final step of Japan. So far, reportedly still localized radiation.

Head of Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten) As Natio Lasman said nuclear radiation that occurred so far will not get to the territory of Indonesia.
