Case: Shaken Baby Syndrome

When I read the news in The New York Times about the case of shaken baby syndrome, I really fell open almost in disbelief. Shaken baby syndrome is defined as one form of child abuse (child abuse) by shaking the baby violently. Generally the experience shaken baby syndrome (SBS) are infants under age one year and a strong shock is usually done by their own parents or caregivers due to feeling annoyed face endless crying baby. But actions like this harmless, it can cause permanent brain damage, fatal injury in the spinal cord (spinal cord), bleeding in the retina of the eye (causing blindness) and even death in infants.

The case of Noah Whitmer, son of Michael and Erin Whitmer adds a long list of cases of SBS that started a public awareness since the 1980s. Prior to that time, doctors often confusion handle child abuse cases, because the baby's body was not found bruises, burns or broken bones as a guide has occurred persecution. Search results more deeply, especially with CT scan, showing a specific picture of this SBS, which is bleeding in the cavity between the brain and skull (subdural haemorrage), bleeding behind the eye (retinal haemorrage) and swelling of the brain (brain swelling). Noah baby's life (which at the time of the incident four months old) can still be saved, but he suffered severe brain defects.

Babies aged under one year still have a weak neck muscles and head size are proportionally large compared to his body. Shook hard on the shoulder performed by adults (shaking) will give the effect of whiplash injury (neck injury such as the time in high speed car crash, in which the neck pushed forward, then backward fabricated without the anchoring head.) This condition worsened again, as in infants between the brain and there is still a shell of his skull cavity, so that strong shocks can cause a concussion (contusion) and sobeknya blood vessels in the brain.

The case of baby Noah was ensnare Eliana Rueda, baby sitter on child care (day care). On that fateful day, April 20, 2009, baby Noah seemed a little fussy and crying. According to Rueda, see these babies cry, then he raised it to the couch and give the milk bottle in the hope that this baby will fall asleep. But suddenly this baby became limp and noises such as shortness of breath. He immediately give artificial respiration (resuscitation) and called 911. The narrative version of the biological mother based on testimony doctor Noah indeed opposites. According to Erin Whitmer, the mother, the day her baby cry may feel bored with no one noticed was laid and heard the cries of exasperation that it does not cease, Rueda picked it up and then shook violently.

At the time of Noah to the hospital, she was in a coma. The result of the doctor with MRI clearly shows the three typical symptoms of shaken baby syndrome are subdural bleeding, retinal bleeding and bruising of the brain. Doctors also perform laboratory tests for blood clotting disorders (clotting disorder) which usually cause bleeding, but lab results are negative. From where doctors menerangai and strong suspect that Noah was being shaken violently, before he suffered respiratory failure. A day after the incident the caregivers Rueda, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse.

Nearly 25 percent of shaken baby syndrome cases ended with the death of a baby. Noah's life was saved, but he suffered permanent disability in both the brain and eyes. For a year after this tragic event, this baby had convulsions (seizures), which reaches up to 32 times a day. He is also required to sleep in a standing position to download the drain pools of blood around her eyes. Now Noah is two years old, but he still could not speak and the prognosis very poor cognitive skills. Only after a year undergo a strict ketogenic therapy, Noah was free of seizures. According to health data in the U.S., there are about 200 cases of shaken baby syndrome annually, a quarter of that amount resulted in permanent brain and eye defects and another quarter ended with the death of a baby.

Shaking a baby is certainly not the same as swinging the baby by the feet or shaking gently to play. However, it is wise to listen to the following recommendations: Never shake a baby or toddler, especially when you're angry, do not hold the baby when you're arguing, do not punish or discipline the child by shaking her shoulders and when you are irritability (short tempered), infant care leave this to someone else who is more competent. There are some mild cases of SBS in infants similar to that worn on the back (the backpack) and invited to go jogging. However, only mild symptoms and very much different from the shaken baby syndrome that have been defined as a form of child abuse (child abuse).
