Libya War: Strikes on Libya

The international meeting in Paris has concluded; French warplanes are already conducting reconnaissance overflights; and by the time you read this airstrikes against Gaddafi's forces may already have begun.

In many ways it is astonishing quickly we've moved from a no-fly zone to an operation where ground forces will clearly be the priority target, especially given the stance of most major powers just a few days ago.

This is therefore the time when we will once again put Western air power to the test. Despite hugely advanced technological capabilities, the track record is not fantastic.

Assumptions of what air power alone can achieve against ground forces have usually turned out to be overrated; witness for example the relatively small amount of damage done to Serbian armoured forces by NATO in 1999.

Libya War: US fighter jet crashes in Tripoly

A US F-15 fighter jet has crashed in Libya, reportedly due to a technical fault, during a raid against anti-aircraft defences in the northeast of the country.

The US Africa command said on Tuesday that both its two-man crew ejected safely.

"Two crew members ejected from their US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle when the aircraft experienced equipment malfunction over northeast Libya, March 21, 2011 at approximately 10:30 pm CET," the command, based in the western German city of Stuttgart, said in a statement.

"Both crew members ejected and are safe ... the cause of the incident is under investigation."

Nicole Dalrymple, a command spokeswoman, told AFP news agency that the crew had sustained minor injuries. She said the crash was not a result of hostile action.

Turkey: No-Fly Zone Role For NATO

France has proposed that a new political steering committee outside of NATO be responsible for overseeing military operations over Libya to enforce a UN-backed no-fly zone.

The announcement came after Turkey, a member of the NATO, warned on Tuesday that it could not agree to the military alliance taking over the enforcement of the no-fly zone if their mission went "outside the framework" of the UN decision.

Alain Juppe, the French foreign minister, said the new body would bring together foreign ministers from participating states, including Britain, France and the US, as well as the Arab League.

It is expected to meet in the coming days, either in Brussels, London or Paris.

Juppe said not all members of the military coalition are members of NATO so "this is therefore not a NATO operation".

However, he said the coalition would use NATO's "planning and intervention capabilities".

On Monday, Barack Obama, the US president, had said that Washington would transfer its leading role on Libya "within days" to ensure the burden of enforcing the no-fly zone was shared.

Google Chrome New Logo - 2011

Looks like Google is rebranding the logo for Google Chrome to look a little bit different in the latest development build. As you can see from the screenshot below which is from the latest development version, Chrome sports a new logo as compare to earlier versions.

The newer logo is more flatter than the earlier one and does not have any spaces between the different colors and the ball in the middle. The grey delimiter has been replaced except for a circle around the blue ball. I am not sure when this design change came through, but I would definitely prefer to see the older logo. Firefox 4 now available

The Mozilla team this morning officially released the public version of Firefox 4.

The update for Firefox 3.6 users will be available at roughly 10:20 a.m., developers said moments ago.

Version 4 desktop release features a redesigned user interface, new JavaScript engine, hardware acceleration, new synchronization capabilities and up to date support for important web technologies such as HTML5 and WebGL.

The final code is based essentially on the first release candidate that shipped March 9, sans a few fixes. Bugs that surfaced after RC1 shipped were addressed in a follow up release candidate 2 for Windows, OSX and Linux that slipped out late last week.
